Himmeli Side Table
What to do:
Step 1: Create the Himmeli Base - Measure and cut the copper pipe to 30 pieces of 25cm lengths. Cut about a 3m length of twine. Start stringing together the first three pieces of tubing. Make sure you pull very tightly and tie a secure knot at the end of each triangle to prevent the twine from gaining slack. The tighter the better.
Note: It’s normal for the himmeli orb base to feel flimsy while you’re creating it, but don’t give up. The strength and stability of the table is created at the end when all pieces are tied together. If you run out of your first piece of twine, cut yourself another 3m length, and attach the new piece to one of the corner joints.
Step 2: Cut the Table Top - To measure out a perfect circle. Measure the diameter of the widest points in the copper himmeli side table base using a piece of twine. Fold the twine in half, mark the center, then lay it flat on the wood. Tape the center down with a piece of tape, take a pen and hold the end of the twine in your fingers and draw out a circle. This is a nice little trick if you don’t have an over-sized protractor handy.
Cut out the circle using a saw.
Step 3: Finish the Edges of the Table Top - To finish the edges of the table top, take a strip of edge banding tape with iron-on glue and apply it to the edges of the round top. The edge banding is typically wider than you need, so all you have to do is use a box cutter to cut off the excess. Once you do that, give the edges a gentle, low-grit sanding to smooth things out.
Step 4: Apply Clear Wax to the Table Top - Apply a coat of clear varnish to the wood top, both the top side and the under side.
Step 5: Attach the Base to the Table Top - Once the table is dry, place it on the ground, and placed the orb center and fastened the himmeli orb base using three 1cm copper pipe hangers. Make sure you use short screws so it does not pop out on the other side of the table top
